Recently my friend Kate sent a very easy, light, and QUICK homemade pizza dough recipe. As I looked for topping ideas, I ran across a homemade turkey sausage. I've made both recipes twice in two weeks. The first pizzas I cooked on our gas grill, the second batch in the oven. They're that good and "super simple" as Sandra Lee would say. You have no excuse NOT to try this.
Whole Wheat and Honey Pizza Dough
Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes
Yields: I got 4 "good" individual pizzas from the dough; the recipe says it yields 12 slices for one large crust
Ingredients:
1 (.25 oz.) package active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 tsp salt
1 T honey
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 min.
3. In a large bowl combine flour, wheat germ and salt. Make a well in the middle and add honey and yeast mixture. Stir well to combine. Cover and set in a warm place to rise for a few minutes.
4. Roll dough on a floured (plenty of flour) pizza pan and poke a few holes in it with a fork.
5. Bake in preheated oven for 5 to 10 minutes, or until desired crispiness is achieved
- I rolled each crust out on wax paper on my counter top, as thin as I could get it. It sticks very easily though so don't be afraid to use the flour on everything.
- I baked about 15 - 20 minutes for extra crispy crust
- When I grilled the pizza, I oiled and preheated the gas grill, then threw on the raw pizza dough (no foil underneath) for about 10 minutes. It turned out great and so crispy!
- I also froze half the dough for 2 days, then let it thaw a day and it turned out fine.
