One research article I'm reading for Occupational Health Psychology (OHP) tonight is about stress on the job and personality types. I thought I'd summarize a quick paragraph for my circle of Type A and quasi- Type A friends.Basically, it starts with the idea that type A persons relate to job stress through the perception of one's job and through emotions....
It has been "argued that type A individuals have a high need for control and overreact to uncontrollable stressors." In other words, type A folks overreact to things that it is impossible to control themselves.
"...type A individuals are overly sensitive to job stressors". They also "perceive greater workloads" than other, non type A individuals. Note "perceive". Even if workload remains the same for two individuals, a type A person basically feels there's a heavier workload than others might.
"In addition, it seems likely that the hostility and impatience components of type A reflect a low threshold for anger and frustration." Watch out!
Type A tendencies are also related to negative health symptoms.
Honestly until now I didn't realize that "type A" was an accepted way to describe someone's personality in scientific research. But that's another (boring) story.
If you consider yourself type A, I'm sure you know all the positive things about your personality quirks. This is just a reminder to keep it in check, strive for balance and work to manage that self-induced or increased perception of stress. For your health and your sanity.
Next time I attempt to share research I'll strive to make it at least a little more interesting. This entry is about as boring as I feel right now...
