I started packing on Monday.
I'm posting a pic of some of my must-have's, old and new.
Old:
Body Glide - it's like a deodorant stick that you rub on your body. On places that rub. So instead of getting a burn from my sports bra, it will "glide" and be less painful post-run. Good for men's chests as well to prevent bleeding on "sensitive" areas (from wet shirt/chest friction).
Gu - 100 calories of flavored gel you typically eat anywhere from 6 to 10 miles (or ~1 hr.) into the run. A great energy boost, I usually prefer it at about mile 8.
Fuel Belt (not pictured) - My trusty belt will hold water and purple Gatorade. They hand out drinks along the route, but I like having it whenever I need it. I also safety pin our Gu/Bloks to my belt.
New:
iPhone arm band - Derrick wears this when we run together and we use the iPhone application "Pandora" to listen to our own music stations (no headphones required).
Benedryl - To help me sleep the night before the race
Headband - to keep my bangs and fly-away hairs out of my face (so annoying)
Clif "SHOT Bloks" - Gu rarely tastes good to me. I've tried lots of flavors and other brands. It's just hard to eat warm gooey stuff while you run if you have to choke it down. These SHOT Blocks are like 1" jelly cubes that provide the same jolt. I've tested this "margarita" package before and they're delicious. They're pretty salty (to help your body absorb H2O) but keep you busy for a minute while you chew. I'll eat 3 of these and let Derrick have the Gu (Don't worry, hubby. I got cherry SHOT Bloks for you, too). Fig Newtons are another yummy running snack, but not quite as easy to carry along while you run.
